Author Talk: Benjamin Weber with Ayo Scott and Jalil Muntaqim
The African American and African Studies department welcomes you to join us on Sunday, October 15th to celebrate the book launch of Dr. Benjamin Weber's new book: American Purgatory: Prison Imperialism and the Rise of Mass Incarceration (The New Press).
American Purgatory book celebration features author and UC Davis African American Studies Dr. Benjamin Weber in conversation with longtime activist Jalil A. Muntaqim whose story is featured in the book, and visual artist Ayo Y. Scott, who did the artwork for the book.
The book reveals how the story of American prisons is inextricably linked to the expansion of American empire around the globe. Guided by a rich history of prison resistance -- from Seminole Chief Osceola to Assata Shakur -- it invites us to rethink the scope of America’s long freedom struggle.
Event will take place at the Manetti Shrem Museum on Sunday October 15, 2-3:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public, followed by a reception at The Snug in Sacramento from 4-6 p.m.
